First set of NEO Observations!

Hello Asteroid Hunters,

Congratulations!
Several of you have your name in the 'NEO Observations' list! Observations means the 3rd or 4th observation of a NEO that has been discovered. Observations allow further refinement of the orbit.

See the Discovery and Observation list here on the IASC page:
http://iasc.hsutx.edu/

I hope most of you have sorted out installation and other issues with Astrometrica by now. If you still have any problems, please contact
Technical Contact: Poonam Sharma 9212669908

Do remember these points while creating a report:
1. Please look at data only in your folder
2. Please send only 1 report per team.
3. Put in a line with image set name, that is the same name as the directory name.
4. Name of the file should be the same as the image set

PLEASE REMEMBER TO CC ALL REPORTS To SPACE AT the following, since SPACE needs to check and track all reports. If you have any doubts, please clarify with us before you send it to IASC.

Email to SPACE here:
aiasc@space-india.org

Regards and HAPPY HUNTING!

IASC Updates 27 May, 12:00 AM

Greetings from the International Astronomical Search Collaboration

The Discoveries & Observations page at the IASC web site has been updated.  You and your students can check it out at http://iasc.hsutx.edu/index_files/Page786.htm.

So far, there have been no Main Belt asteroid discoveries in the All-India Search Campaign, but there have been many near-Earth object observations.  These observations are important as they allow the Minor Planet Center (Harvard) to further refine the orbits of these potentially Earth-threatening rock boulders.

There are some Main Belt asteroid discoveries made earlier by the students participating in the Xinglong Asteroid Search Campaign (China).  You will find these listed on the IASC web site.

There are no new image sets from the ARI Observatory due to continued unsettled weather across the Midwestern United States.  There are earlier image sets available in the school folders dated May 22nd and May 25th.  If your students have not yet analyzed these sets, have them download them and use Astrometrica to conduct a search.

When new image sets are available, you will be notified immediately.  Keep an eye on your folder, and in the meanwhile...

Happy Hunting!!

IASC Updates 26 May, 2:00 AM

Greetings from the International Astronomical Search Collaboration

Image Sets Available

There are image sets available from the ARI Observatory.  These are dated May 25th.  All schools now have at least one image set in their folders.  Check your folder!!

Happy Hunting!!

IASC Updates 23 May, 7:00 AM

Greetings from the International Astronomical Search Collaboration

Check your school folder.  There are some image sets available dated May 22nd.  Your students need to download and analyze these sets within 72 hours (i.e., by May 25th).

Not all of the schools have an image set but more sets should be coming this week.  As they are available, you will be notified and the image sets will be uploaded into the folders.

The skies are darker and the fainter Main Belt asteroid discoveries are just waiting for your students.

Happy Hunting!!

IASC Updates 21 May, 1:15 AM

Greetings from the International Astronomical Search Collaboration

The weather remains a problem at the ARI Observatory (Westfield, IL).  They have been no new image sets since May 17th, and the weather forecast is not promising for the next two days.

I realize it is hard for your students to be patient, but the skies will clear.  The full Moon has waned so the night skies are getting darker.  The skies have to be dark for your students to make the faint Main Belt asteroid discoveries.

Be patient.  Check your school folder, and in the meantime...

Happy Hunting!

Update at 7:30 pm, 19th May

All of the school folders have one image set dated either May 17th or 18th.  Due to overcast skies, there are no new image sets from May 19th, and the weather does not look promising for the rest of the week.

Part of observational astronomy is contending with the weather.  The skies will eventually clear and new images will become available.  When they do, you will be notified immediately.

Just in case, keep an eye on your folder, and...

Happy Hunting!!

Image sets available to all schools/groups now!!!

Greetings from the International Astronomical Search Collaboration

Image Sets Available

All school folders have at least one image set from the ARI Observatory.  These are dated May 17th and 18th.  Your students will need to download and analyze them by no later than May 20th.  You need to prepare the Minor Planet Center (MPC) report and attach it to an email sent to

iascsearch(at)hsutx.edu along with a copy to SPACE.  There is only one MPC report for each image set.
Check your folder, and in the meanwhile...

Happy Hunting!!

UPDATES FROM AIASC - May 18th

Update from the International Astronomical Search Collaboration

Image sets are available in some of the school folders.

The skies are still unsettled at the ARI Observatory.  Also we have tonight's bright, full Moon.  It will take a couple of days for there to be a sufficient number of sets to distribute to all of the schools.  Tell your students to be patient...image sets for them to analyze will soon be available!!

Everyone should have user ids and passwords by now.

If not, or if you still have installation problems - please contact us at aiasc@space-india.org.
------------------------------
Thanks students! Some students have been very prompt and send it very careful, prompt and clean reports! Good work!

Report Notes:
1. Please remember to send your reports here also (aiasc@space-india.org) as a cc.
2. Please remember to write your school name in abbreviation within brackets after MEA names. Ex:
MEA M. Mitra, J. Soin, C. Devgun (BBPS Noida)

AIASC Phase I STARTS ON 16th MAY

Welcome to the select team of asteroid hunters!

As you know, Phase I will start on May 16th. All your email ids (or for the coordinator in case of organizations) have been forwarded to IASC, and you will directly start getting emails from there. The steps again are as follows:

1. You will get a user id and password
Could be anytime on 16th or close to it.

2. Go to website
http://iasc.hsutx.edu/

Go to link All India Search -I and All India Search-II and look for your folder names.
If there are two teams from one school/org (Amity Int. Vasundhara, Bhaskaracharya, and Star Gazing Club) - check with me or look at the space website - www.space-india.org for which team you are in.

Teams and Team Members are listed here:

3. Login to your folder and download your data to your computer.
Do this right away even if you cant analyse then.

4. Open Astrometrica, and load this data and do the analysis - 'moving object detection' followed by 'manual detection'.

5. Create the MPC Report, and edit it on notepad:
a. Add all participant initial and last names, and school name in brackets.
ex. MEA A. Singh, M. Gupta, R. Raman (DPS Sonepat)
b. Add Image set name (which should be the directory name of the image set)
c. save the file with the imageset name.txt
(Only save in txt, not MS word as it adds formatting)

6. Send mail to the following, with the report as an attachment and the image name in the subject line.
iascsearch@hsutx.edu
Remember to cc SPACE at:
aiasc@space-india.org

7. Repeat this process every time you get  mail saying that data may be in folders.

8. All updates will also be posted on the SPACE website
www.space-india.org
Note that all confirmations and discoveries are posted on:
http://iasc.hsutx.edu/index_files/Page786.htm

9. If you are a coordinator - which is true only for organizations (Doon School, Bhaskaracharya, Star Gazing, Astronomicans and SPACE) - its upto you to forward all relevant emails to your group in a timely way. However, I will post everything on the SPACE website as soon as possible.

We will check the first few reports for formatting etc. Hope all of you have Astrometrica installed and ready to go! If not, send a query to the following address.
If you have any concerns especially in the first week, do not hesitate to contact us or get your reports checked.
PLEASE CONTACT US IF YOU HAVE QUERIES here:
